High Build Primer Application

MaxMeyer tutorial on applying High Build Primer.

Step 1 Pre-Clean

Pre-Clean the panels to be primed with a MaxMeyer waterborne pre-cleaner. Apply the waterborne pre-cleaner to the panels with the spray applicator.

After applying the waterborne pre-cleaner, wipe the panel dry by using a quality sprit wipe or precleaning cloth. This will remove dirt, grime, dust and soluble salts from the panels leaving them clean for the primer to be applied.

Step 2 Gun Set up

For the correct and best application of the MaxMeyer High Build Primer you need to ensure the spraygun is set up correctly to get optimum performance out of the product. We would recommend a 1.6mm tip size for the MaxMeyer High Build Primer.

Using a gun gauge set the spraygun to the spraygun manufacturers recommendations. Place a piece of paper onto a panel onto a stand and number across the top from 1/2 through to 4 at 1/2 increments.

Screw the fluid delivery on the spraygun fully in and then turn out 1/2 a turn. Hold the spraygun approximately5-6 inches from the paper infront of the 1/2 increment.

Pull the spraygun trigger for approximately 1/2 a second, this will give you a fan pattern.

Open the fluid delivery nob another 1/2 a turn and move to the next increment and pull the trigger. Continue this right the way through to 4 turns. The aim is to get maximum pattern size with minimum fluid delivery so it gives you maximum control of the spraygun and product.

This is three turns in this video, so screw the fluid delivery fully in and then screw out three full turns.

Then spray on the paper for a feel of what it will be like when applying the primer to the panel. The spraygun is now set up correctly for the high build primer application.

For Whole Panel Application

Step 1 – Apply etch primer

Blow and tac the panel clean. Apply a first coat of etch primer and leave to flash for 10 minutes. Apply a second coat of etch primer then leave to fully flash for another 10 minutes.

Blow and tac rag the bonnet removing any etch primer overspray. The etch primer overspray can be seen on the tac rag.

Step 2 – Apply High Build Primer

Apply one fully coalesce wet coat to the whole panel. Leave to flash off for 5 minutes then apply the second full coat, again leave to flash off for 5 minutes then apply the third and final coat of High Build Primer.

When completed, refer to the technical data sheet of baking temperatures and times or air dry cure times.

For Part Panel Application

Step 1 – Apply etch primer

Apply first coat of etch primer and leave to flash off for ten minutes, apply second coat of etch primer then leave to fully flash off for another ten minutes.

Step 2 – Apply High Build Primer

Blow and tac the panel clean. Apply first coalesce wet coat to the furthest points then flash off for 5 minutes. Apply the second fully coalesce wet coat inside the first coat then flash off for 5 minutes. Apply the third fully coalesce wet coat inside the second coat and flash off for 5 minutes.

When completed refer to the technical data sheet for baking temperature and cure times, infrared cure times or air dry cure times.
